The Common Thread Project is a multi-disciplinary art series commemorating survivors of sexual violence through photography, film, and quiltwork. Common Thread displays the diversity of experiences, emotions, struggles and triumphs that survivors of sexual violence carry each day. This exhibit features 15 portraits of survivors from various backgrounds and different communities throughout the Chicagoland area. Each survivor was photographed on medium format by Montreal based photographer and filmmaker James Perry. Our Survivors’ Quilt, designed and sewn by Nigerian born artist Mesoma Onyeagba, was constructed using pieces of fabric donated by the survivors in this series, many of which were worn during their past traumas. The history of sexual violence has been woven into the fabric of our country since its inception and continues to tear our society apart. This quilt is a physical representation of the shared pain that unites all survivors of sexual violence and our collective commitment to justice and healing, one story at a time. The short documentary on The Common Thread Project, directed by Danielle DeGrasse-Alston, will be released in 2025.
