Mission

Black Sheep/ˈˌblak ˈSHēp/

Noun
A colloquial idiom referring to a person who stands out from a group— an outlier personified; In Nassim Taleb’s 2007 book The Black Swan, he describes a “black swan event” as a highly improbable moment in history which completely reshapes society in its wake, whether the impact of this event be positive or negative (i.e. the Covid-19 pandemic). If Black Swans are the life-altering events which shape our world, then Black Sheep are those underdog figures in history whose unique ideas, inventions, creations, etc. change society forever.

Black Sheep Collective is a nonprofit arts and humanities foundation with tax exemption status under IRC 501(c)(3). BSC brings young artists together to share our knowledge, creative gifts, and visions of a more just society freely with one another. We believe art has the power to transform the world, and that it is the responsibility of our Black Sheep– our artists and writersto pave the way forward.

Black Sheep Collective produces and commissions public art projects, programs, and digital media content that explore the socioeconomic, political, cultural, and environmental issues facing our society today. We have a responsibility as artists and art administrators to empower a new generation of artists to contextualize these events through the language of art, and to facilitate their creative process.

Our aim is to build a digital media landscape where young artists, writers, thinkers and enthusiasts alike may gather to exchange ideas, workshop creative projects with fellow creatives, and engage in intellectual discourse with likeminded people on art, literature and social sciences, and receive opportunities which will benefit our digital community in the real world. Black Sheep Collective will become a pioneer of online education, creating an immersive, social learning experience for people across all backgrounds all over the world. We believe education is a human right, and we hope to make the arts and humanities freely accessible to all.
